JUST BECAUSE | Winter Mountain Vacation
The Couple: Burgundy & Mike
The Season: Late spring, still winter but warmish!
The Location: Banff & Lake Louise
A Snippet About the Day: It was mid-March when I met with Burgundy & Mike for winter mountain vacation photos while they were visiting Banff. They traveled in from Utah (and coincidentally I met up with them again a few weeks later when I traveled to Utah for the first time & fell absolutely head over heels in love with the state! I’ll be sharing photos from sessions I did with them there too, but for now, we’re going to pay attention to their winter mountain vacation in Banff!). We met up at Bow Falls which is a location I love in the off-season, pretty much whenever there is snow. It’s a really hard spot to shoot in the summer but with the ice giving so much more space to get around, it’s a great spot to shoot in the winter! Afterwards we headed up to Surprise corner & then hit the road towards Sunshine Village. There’s a spot at the bottom of the road that I really like if the sun is in the right spot. We then headed off to Lake Louise to get the full winter mountain vacation photo experience since Lake Louise is still a full-on winter wonderland in March. I was hoping the Ice Castle would still be intact but it had been bulldozed (sad!!) but the pile of icy blue blocks gave us something new to work with on the frozen Lake, so that’s always exciting.
Vacation Planning Tip: If you are wanting winter wonderland when you visit, Lake Louise is frozen from early November until the end of May usually, finally thawing in early June most years. My absolute favourite time to visit Lake Louise, however, is the middle to end of October when the Lake isn’t fully frozen & the water is super blue & there’s fresh snow on the ground. Pure magic!! That would be a great time for a winter mountain vacation! Just don’t tell everyone, we don’t want it to get too crowded! 😉
