JUST BECAUSE: Bonneville Salt Flats Couples Session
The Couple: Burgundy & Mike
The Season: Spring (early April)
The Location: Bonneville Salt Flats, UT in all their flooded glory!
A Snippet About the Day: This here was the whole reason I planned a trip to Utah. I’d seen pictures of the Bonneville Salt Flats & instantly fell in love. They look great in the dry season but I wanted to see them flooded at sunset. That was what my dreams were made of. Burgundy bought a killer Mac Duggal gown for the shoot & Mike rocked a Tom Ford suit. They looked incredible. I just love this kind of formal look for couples photos! We found a good spot, kicked off our shoes & went on the wet salt. The air was still and we got amazing reflections. The sunset couldn’t have been any more perfect. My first time shooting at the flooded Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah was truly epic! I did, however, learn a few lessons that evening about shooting at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Tips for shooting at the Bonneville Salt Flats: This might seem silly to realize now, but crystallized salt is sharp. We went barefoot on the salt flats because we didn’t want to ruin shoes. But those hard crystals under the water just kill the feet after awhile. So pack clear sandals or wear shoes you don’t mind destroying. Seriously. Save your feet. And the salt gets everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Splashed up your legs. On your camera. Just all over the place. Bring towels and bottles of water to wash away the salt once you are done. A little moisturizer will also help since the salt really dries out your skin. You can also walk super far across the Bonneville Salts Flats to get away from the people. Like walk for an extra 5 minutes & there will be way less people in your background. And that water is cold. Depending on the time of year you are there, be prepared to have super cold, pickled feet at the end of the night. And your feet will turn a weird colour after standing in the sharp, salty water for a while. From what I hear, the Bonneville Salt Flats are flooded from October to May, but don’t hold me to that! In the dry season they form a really awesome white crystal crust which also looks cool for photos!
