We are all used to seeing the idyllic photos of Lake Louise on a calm day when the water is that brilliant turquoise but’s not what happened for Olivia & Matthew’s windy Lake Louise wedding. The weather, light, angles and time of day drastically impact how the iconic water is going to look at Lake Louise along with the other mountain lakes. We were set to have their ceremony in the meadow by the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise but Mama grizzly and her two cubs (that were lingering for Jeanette & Luis’ elopement earlier in the month) had shut the area down for two weeks! If you’ve been to Lake Louise, you know there aren’t many spots that are big enough to accommodate a group for a ceremony (and especially if you haven’t booked and paid dearly for a space at the Fairmont) so I was left scrambling to find a new location. With it being a ridiculously windy day (I’m not talking a light breeze here, it was intense!), the canoes weren’t safe to go out on the Lake so the boathouse had closed and we were able to do the ceremony in that corner without much walk through traffic. I thought it was fun to have the canoes and the boathouse in the background just for something different!
After a brief ceremony overlooking Lake Louise & the boathouse, we wandered back closer to the hotel for family photos and couples photos. You can see in the images that the water is nearly white. Why you ask? Because the bright overhead sun combined with the choppiness of the water was reflecting away all the colour. The Lake just can’t look the same as it would on a calm day later in the evening or early in the morning. Was it still beautiful? Absolutely. You can never predict what nature is going to throw at you and you just need to roll with it and that’s what Olivia & Matthew did for their windy Lake Louise wedding. I love that we were able to show what it was truly like that day and that they were still two people in love who got married in a beautiful place! The wind didn’t ruin it, it just made things different! One thing to learn for getting married in the mountains is you truly cannot control the weather and the conditions and you just have to embrace the wild beauty for what it is, wild. Here’s some of my favourite photos from Olivia & Matthew’s windy Lake Louise wedding from this past Summer!
